DISCO ROBOTS

Large-scale, sequenced robot performance
for electronic music festivals

Disco Robots are a matched pair of 6-foot, retro-futurist performance robots designed to transform electronic music stages into a physical, character-led spectacle. They feature animated LED matrix eyes and chest displays, with additional integrated LED features across the robots for maximum stage presence, alongside expressive movement and tightly sequenced visuals that evolve with the music. Designed to perform together as a synchronised pair, the robots operate as a single visual system and are significantly more impactful when operating together.

About

Disco Robots are a matched pair of 6-foot, retro-futurist performance robots designed to transform electronic music stages into a physical, character-led spectacle. They feature animated LED matrix eyes and chest displays, with additional integrated LED features across the robots for maximum stage presence, alongside expressive movement and tightly sequenced visuals that evolve with the music.

Live Performance History

Disco Robots had a successful soft launch in summer 2025 at Utopia Frequency, performing alongside Dave the Drummer and Nicky Blackmarket. The performance validated the robots' suitability for festival stages, DJ-integrated sets, and live production environments, confirming strong audience impact and visual presence.

Creative Direction & Operation

Disco Robots are created and operated by Michael Overscan, a visual artist and VJ with long-standing experience in electronic music performance environments. Active as a VJ from the mid-1990s and again from 2019 to the present day, he brings a deep understanding of musical structure, pacing, and crowd dynamics to every performance. The same custom sequencing system is used to drive both the robots and live visuals, allowing for tightly integrated performances where animation and on-screen content evolve together.

Live

Large-scale, sequenced robot performance for electronic music festivals. UK-based and available for festivals, indoor venues, and special events. Usually booked as a synchronised pair.

Performance Formats

DJ-Integrated Performance Disco Robots performing alongside a DJ or live electronic artist, with sequenced animation and movement evolving throughout the set. Ideal for headline slots, sunset sets, or visually led performances.
Stage Feature / Visual Anchor The robots act as a living stage element, providing continuous ambient motion and animated content, suitable for second stages, art stages, or extended programming.
Special Moments Use for opening sequences, closing moments, or curated highlights, programmable to punctuate key moments in a festival schedule.

What Disco Robots Add to a Festival

  • A strong visual identity for a stage or area
  • A clear crowd focal point that draws attention without distraction
  • Highly photogenic, shareable moments
  • A bridge between music, art, and performance
  • Family-friendly by day, immersive and hypnotic by night
  • Audiences don't expect robots, and they don't expect this scale

How It Works

  • The robots are live-sequenced, not autonomous
  • Visuals and movement are programmed to align with musical structure
  • Designed to sit on stage, flanking or framing the DJ
  • Operation is calm, predictable, and production-friendly
  • This is a controlled performance system, not a roaming installation

Technical & Logistics (Production-Friendly)

  • Robots are usually booked as a synchronised pair (no price or operational difference for a single unit)
  • Setup time: approximately 4-5 hours
  • Flexible and able to work around stage build and crew schedules
  • Crew: 1 lead operator
  • Plus 1-2 additional crew as required
  • Detailed technical information can be supplied in advance to production teams.

Tech

Environment & Weather

  • Indoor venues
  • Covered outdoor stages (festival tents, canopies, arc stages)
  • Light drizzle is not an issue when under cover
  • Not suitable for fully exposed or heavy rain conditions

Optional Integrated Visual Performance

Live VJ visuals can be included as part of the Disco Robots performance. Because visuals and robots are driven by the same sequencing system, this allows for exceptionally tight synchronisation between music, on-screen content, and robot performance — without adding additional technical complexity for the festival.
